Mumbai records 757 COVID-19 cases, highest rise for fifth straight day

The city on Saturday reported 757 fresh Covid cases, the highest number of cases recorded over 24 hours for the fifth consecutive day.

Although no casualties were reported, the state health officials voiced concerns about the spike in cases. “The number of cases has more than doubled, marking a rise in fresh cases for the fifth day in a row,” the civic body said.

The city recorded 327 cases on Tuesday, 490 on Wednesday, 602 on Thursday and 683 on Friday.

The city’s cumulative caseload has increased to 7,70,190, while the death toll remained unchanged at 16,368. The city’s Omicron cases stood at 23 till Saturday.

On Friday, the state government had imposed several restrictions including on any gathering of more than five persons between 9 pm and 6 am and a cap on the number of people attending public events.

Seeing the surge of Omicron cases, the experts have projected a third wave of the pandemic at the beginning of 2022 — in January and February. The severity of the wave is unlikely to be intense.

As the Centre urged all states and Union territories to be alert amid the festive season, the Mumbai civic authorities have already banned New Year celebration parties and gatherings in closed or open spaces.
