Coronavirus Variants and Vaccinations, Coronavirus Active Cases in India Today News October 3 Live Updates: India on Saturday crossed an important milestone of administering over 90 crore doses since the inoculation drive began in the country back in January. Of these, more than 65 crore are first doses and over 24 crore are second doses. The country is maintaining an average of administering more than 60 lakh people a day. This is an important milestone because, at this rate, India might be able to provide complete vaccine coverage to a significant portion of its adult population, as till the end of September, nearly 69% of the adult population had received the first dose, which means that these people are also due to get their second dose before December-end. Notably, a quarter of the Indian adult population has been fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, India reported 22,842 new Coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, taking its overall Covid-19 tally to 3,38,13,903, according to data from the Union Health Ministry data on Sunday. The number of active cases in the country declined to 2,70,557, the lowest in 199 days. With 244 fresh fatalities, The Covid-19 death toll increased to 4,48,817, the Health Ministry said. Active cases now account for 0.80% of India’s total infections, the lowest since March 2020, as per health ministry data.

India has been witnessing just over 20,000 Covid-19 cases daily for the past few days. While India has been maintaining a robust vaccination drive, cases need to decline if India is to beat the pandemic and prevent a third wave. However, so far, the country has been succeeding in keeping a surge in cases at bay, with Kerala being the state where most of the cases are being reported in absolute numbers. Mizoram has also been reporting a high number of cases as compared to its population. While Kerala has seen a decline in absolute numbers of the past few days though the figures are still well above 10,000, Mizoram has seen a surge in cases instead. However, both the states have announced further relaxations in restrictions ahead of the festive season, which could trigger a sharp spike in cases and undo the advantage India has gained over the disease so far.
